So I’ve been on this little island called Saipan (a US Territory entitled to taxpayer assistance…that’ll be relevant in a sec) for the last week and a half, and I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever been to a more absurd place. I’d done a little reading before coming here and learned it has a long history of corruption/ridiculous politics/etc. No biggie. So does Providence, RI and I count it as one of my favorite small cities in the world.
Oh boy. Since I’ve been here:
The Saipan government is billing the US Government $500,000+ for assistance in paying attorney fees from a case that, from the onset, the Saipan government publicly said was a losing case. The person they were suing? The US Government.
They’ve sent a helicopter to a tiny island several times. The first time to register the voters, the second time to collect their votes. The third time for some other reason. Each time cost taxpayers over $10K. There are four people that live on the island. And they have a phone.
A local cop was praised in the newspaper for his detective work. The next day the FBI arrested him for shaking down the illegal taxi drivers. The next day the Court dismissed several cases where the newly arrested officer was the arresting officer in those cases.
Another local cop got wasted drunk and over the course of a couple of hours in public places proceeded to 1. attempt to stab his girlfriend in the eye with a pair of pliers, 2. chamber a round in his gun and hold it to her head saying he was going to “kill tonight” 3. punch her in the leg and 4. “tried to hit her in the face with a can of beer.” Only after the can throwing episode were the police called.
DUI and reckless endangerment charges against a Palau “Health Minister” were dismissed due to “lack of prosecution.” Not because the prosecution had a weak case or anything, but because, in the words of the prosecuting attorney, “[The Health Minister] is a high ranking official … and it is not in the best interest of the country to prosecute him.” Yep, lack of prosecution it is.
